Autism Spectrum Disorder and Your Child’s Sleeping Patterns

August 29, 2022

Getting a restful night’s sleep on a regular basis can be challenging for some children, and the issue is even more pronounced for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). It’s estimated that between 40 percent and 80 percent of children with ASD have sleep-related challenges. Of course, when your child is struggling to sleep, it affects the entire family.

At Total Care ABA Therapy, we make the health and well-being of your child and family our top priorities. That’s why we specialize in Applied Behavior Analysis — the scientifically recognized gold standard in attaining measurable improvements in your child’s quality of life. Our team of Board Certified Behavior Analysts/Licensed Behavior Analysts provide dedicated, compassionate care that is simply unmatched among behavioral health agencies.

Some of the most pronounced sleep-related problems faced by children with ASD include frequently waking, restlessness, erratic sleep routines, and difficulties falling asleep when they first get into bed. These problems can manifest themselves during the child’s waking hours in behaviors such as irritability, aggressiveness, hyperactivity or depression. Sleep deprivation can have a dramatic effect on a child’s behavior and cognitive skills.

Although the reasons why ASD contributes to sleep issues have not been definitively identified, hormonal imbalances and the inability to respond to social cues at bedtime are believed to play a role. It’s suggested that parents keep a sleep diary to track the number of hours the child sleeps each night and include behavioral observations during those hours and the following day. The recommended number of hours of sleep for children range from 12-14 hours a day for ages 1-3; 10-12 hours for ages 3-6; and 10-11 hours for ages 7-12.

At Total Care ABA Therapy, we believe Applied Behavioral Analysis can deliver life-changing results for your child, as well as for your entire family. Please contact us for details on our program and enrollment process.
