Recognizing and Responding to ASD Sensory Issues

One of the most common behavioral traits among children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an increased sensitivity to sights, sounds, touch, odors, tastes, and balance. People with ASD can experience over-responsiveness (hypersensitivity) or under-responsiveness (hyposensitivity), or with a combination of both, to certain situations. Hypersensitivity can trigger a reaction that results in an overwhelming need to immediately escape from certain sounds or other stimuli. Hyposensitivity can lead a person with autism to seek stimulation by making loud noises, rocking back and forth, or touching people or things.

Our compassionate, committed ABA team has the experience and training to spot these reactions and to make the adjustments necessary to prevent them from escalating into a shutdown or a meltdown. These accommodations may include changing the environment, wearing earplugs or dark glasses, adjusting schedules, or using sensory promoting toys and tools. We train parents and family members to recognize the circumstances that precede these intense reactions, and offer guidance on how to defuse an emotionally charged situation.
